I really love Sinatra simplicity to start new web services, it's a really smooth and easy process! I also use it currently in production. It makes a lot of sense (from a performance POV) for APIs and Proxies. But if you're going to build a more complex web app, with views, forms, mails, interactions, ... I'd just start with Rails.
